Ten Things that Suck about being Single

1) One of the hard parts about being single is the lack of a good support group. Being single would be easier if I was not hanging out with a group of guys that are totally like guys in sitcoms. They are either woman repellent, or they’re in bad relationships that they choose to stay in (but still want to live vicariously through me) or they are in decent relationships and disappear. Finding single guys to hang with is easy, but decent wingmen are almost extinct.

2) The third wheel syndrome is a piece of cake, but admittedly it is easier for a guy than a chicka-momma. Most of the time, mature adult couples have no problem being inclusive with singles, and most single guys can have a good time anywhere as long as there is booze and other women to oggle.

3) It’s harder to be a single-wheel than it is being a third-wheel. When you have something that you would like to do with a significant other, and you have no one that is significant to do that thing with, it can be hard. I am talking about stupid little things, like when you want to see a date-movie, or go to a comedy club, and you do not have that ’someone’ to go with, a person that you really give a crap about - that can suck.

4) Another hard issue to overcome is when you are regarded by the ’single people stereotypes’ because you do date casually and it often leads no-where. Ladies are regarded as cock-teases, guys get reputations as players, and both are considered commitment-phobes. Thanks for the labels, society, now bugger off. Being unable to find someone you really like does NOT make you a commitment-phobe, it makes you unwilling to settle. Don’t lose sight of that.

5) The alternative to being stereotyped as I mentioned above is to NOT date casually – thus being regarded as a pathetic loser. And that type of reputation spreads like wildfire. Then you quickly get labeled as ‘desperate’ – regardless of whether or not you even are. And there is nothing attractive about being desperate; it’s better to be thought of as a player or cock-tease.

6) Sleeping alone. For those of us that enjoyed the comforts of sleep-companions, that was a tough one. Once you spent years sleeping in the same bed as someone, waking up alone can take some getting used to. People wondered how I was able to function on 4 hours of sleep per night for the last few years (now I get a full 8). I will let you in on a little secret - it was not by choice.

7) Seeing gifts that you want to get someone and not having a ’someone’ to get them for. That always sucked, especially when you find the perfect gift for someone you used to date. Plus, I like getting gifts and treats from other people, and not too many people I know bring treats to us singles unless they want something in return. And fuck all of the gift-giving holidays. They are the worst, which is why I am now a registered atheist.

8) At a certain age (say about 26), the resource pool of interesting singles who do not have massive baggage is drier than the Sahara. You start looking around, and one day you realize you have out-lived the singles scene, and honestly, so have many of the other singles. Then you can either date people in their early 20’s who you have nothing in common with or lower your standards to date someone who is often damaged goods.
